A Long Island wedding usually runs on one clock. Ceremony at a certain hour, cocktail hour on schedule, reception ending by eleven, and everyone driving home the same night. It works, but it compresses a year of planning into about five hours. Long Island couples who want more than that are increasingly looking north, toward a venue built around the whole weekend instead of a single evening.
Weekend wedding venues for Long Island couples offer more time to celebrate with family and friends beyond a traditional reception. Hudson Valley venues provide Friday through Sunday access, overnight lodging, customizable catering, and flexible ceremony and reception spaces. Couples should compare guest capacity, travel options, included amenities, lodging costs, and transportation when planning a weekend wedding.
What a Weekend Wedding Venue Actually Gives Long Island Couples
The difference is not just distance. It is what happens with the extra time once you have it.
The Weekend Starts Friday, Not Saturday Afternoon
At The Preston Barn at Old Drovers Inn in Dover Plains, NY, the barn and grounds are exclusively yours from Friday at 3 PM through Sunday at 11 AM, with setup the day before your wedding and cleanup the day after. For Long Island couples, that means the wedding party arrives Friday, settles in, and walks through a guided rehearsal that evening, well before anyone is getting dressed for photos.
We sit on 11 acres, roughly 80 miles north of New York City, close enough for Long Island guests to reach comfortably and far enough to create a destination wedding atmosphere away from everyday routines.
On Site Lodging Changes Who Is Around You
A one night reception usually means your closest family scatters to hotel rooms right after the last dance. Here, we offer six lodging options for your wedding weekend, each booked at its own rate. Old Drovers Inn sits directly on the property, with six guest rooms, each with a private bath, and complimentary breakfast. Across the street, the Carriage House adds seven bedrooms, with breakfast at the Inn as well, bringing the total to 13 bedrooms on site. Preston House is just down the road. Lake Ellis Lodge offers 12 bedrooms, each with its own bath, along with a state of the art conference room for up to 24 participants, making it a fit for larger groups and corporate gatherings alike. The seasonal Farm House and Mountain Cabin round out the options for a larger guest list.
One Kitchen, the Whole Weekend
All food and beverage comes from the Old Drovers Inn kitchen, served buffet, family style, or plated, using local and fresh ingredients, with the menu customized to your dietary needs and wants. Dinner reception packages include a one hour cocktail hour with passed hors d'oeuvres, a champagne toast or champagne wall greeting, two signature drinks, and a five hour open bar with soft drinks and water. Dinner brings salad and rolls, three entrée selections such as Chicken Saltimbocca, Prime Rib of Beef, Filet Mignon, or Crab Stuffed Filet of Sole, a starch side, seasonal vegetables, assorted cookies, and coffee.
Because the kitchen is ours for the whole weekend, it can feed more than the reception. Rehearsal dinners can be held in the barn, on the patio, in the tent, or as a private buyout of the Colonial Tap Room or Federal Dining Room.
The Barn Itself, and What It Holds
The barn was built from reclaimed historic barns from the Hudson Valley, so the hand hewn beams, vaulted ceilings, and barn wood floors and walls are original material inside a newer, more comfortable building. Heat and air conditioning run year round, and interior restrooms are steps away. The space holds up to 220 guests comfortably, with room for a dance floor and a live band or DJ.
Included with your booking: 10 farm tables and 14 round 72 inch tables, all linens, tableware and glassware, wood cross back chairs with cushions, the on site ceremony with chairs and arbor, and a wireless PA system so your vows carry clearly. The 40 by 50 foot stone patio handles cocktail hour, and the lawn and tented area works as a lounge or as your rain plan.
Getting Guests From Long Island to Dover Plains
The drive is the real question Long Island couples ask first. We are roughly 80 miles north of New York City, and also less than five miles from the western border of Connecticut, which keeps the venue within reach for guests coming from across the Hudson Valley, Westchester, and Long Island.
For guests who would rather not drive the whole way, we are on the Metro North train line, about five minutes from either the Harlem Valley Wingdale station or the Dover Plains station. Parking sits directly across from the Inn, with handicap parking adjacent to the barn, and the lot supports bus and coach access for larger groups traveling together.
Conclusion
A weekend format is not about adding more events to your calendar. It is about giving the people you love more time with you before you say your vows and more time with each other after. If a Friday to Sunday wedding weekend sounds like what you and your Long Island guests actually want, download our pricing guide or schedule a tour, and we will walk you through the property and how the weekend flows.
